This
is the 83rd year for the Oscar, or The Academy Awards, and is one of the most
anticipated event in the film industry. However, many people do not realize the
most nominations as well as the most Oscars went to one person, Walt Disney.
The Walt Disney corporation has been nominated 59 times and has won 22 of those
nominations. Along with that ( if that wasn't enough) Disney also earned 4
honorary Oscars.
Walt
Disney's first Oscar came with a little remembered film called "Flowers
and Trees" made in 1932. As the years went by Disney was nominated more
and more times not only for his films, but also for the technology he developed
in the animation arena.
In 1937
Walt Disney released a film entitled "Snow White and the Seven
Dwarfs".The film premiered at the Carthay Circle Theater on December 21,
1937 and at its conclusion the audience gave Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs a
standing ovation. Snow White was the first animated feature in America made in
Technicolor. The film became the most successful motion picture of 1938 and
earned over $8 million on its initial release, the equivalent of over
$130,000,000 today.
In 1938
a special Oscar statuette was awarded to Walt Disney in 1938 by Shirley Temple
for 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' that shows an Oscar figure accompanied by
seven 'dwarf' Oscar figures.
As he
awarded the statues Disney said " I'm so proud, I think I can Bust".
The last
Oscar Disney earned was for the best short subject cartoon "Winnie the
Pooh and the Blustery Day". This came posthumously after his death.
In 1992,
Beauty and the Beast was the first-ever animated film to be nominated for an
Academy Award for Best Picture. The lifetime worldwide sales for that film has
been in excess of $425,000,000
The
Disney corporation continues and still continues to excel in all areas of
animation as well as being a leader in non-animated films. As far as the Oscars
are concerened, there will probably be no other individual or company that will
reach the heights that Walt Disney attained. From all the film lovers in the
world, Thank you Walt!
